On September 10, BATHCO co-hosted a working lunch with our partners at CarbonChain. We explored how Renewable Electricity Certificates (RECs, including I-RECs) can increase flexibility in supplying low-carbon Aluminium while sending credible market signals that support new renewable generation.
Why RECs matter
RECs match verified renewable electricity with Aluminium production, allowing producers and buyers to align procurement with cleaner power. This adds geographic and temporal flexibility, supports credible Scope 2 accounting, and helps channel capital toward new renewable projects.
Hurdles discussed
Participants flagged real challenges: the need for greater temporal and locational granularity, and today’s limited willingness to pay a green premium. These are solvable with clearer standards, smarter contracting, and better articulation of buyer value.
What this enables
- More available low-carbon Aluminium for customers today
- Clearer, auditable claims via certified energy attributes
- A practical bridge that accelerates decarbonization while long lead-time assets are built
Our takeaway
Even with hurdles, RECs remain one of the most practical and scalable tools to decarbonize the electricity used in primary Aluminium. It’s tangible progress. Let’s move from talk to action, scaling RECs to put more Green Aluminium on the market and more renewable electricity on the grid.
